SUMMARY:David Breaux Compassion Tour
DESCRIPTION:FOLLOW ALONG WITH REFLECTIONS FROM DAVID AND HIS TIME HERE IN DALLAS: http://www.compassionatedfw.org/david-breaux-dfw-compassion-tour/ \n\n\nDuring the 2016 Compassion Games (September 11 – 21)\, David Breaux will be joining CDFW on his Compassion Tour\, a multi-city tour to raise awareness around compassion. It grows out of the life work of David who\, when not on tour\, resides in Davis\, CA\, where he spent the majority of 2009-2016 working to bring awareness to compassion within that community. \nDavid works mainly by asking people to share their written concept of the word compassion in a notebook. David’s intent is to bring awareness to compassion by encouraging people to think about what compassion means to them. Through this simple gesture\, people are moved to contemplate compassion and inspired to act toward the alleviation of suffering in the world. \nWhile on tour\, David also facilitates community-based discussions. He gives interactive presentations on the concept of compassion\, as well as reflections from his work and personal experience. \nDavid is available for small or large group compassion presentations while in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Go to http://bestofbcb.org/cafe-017- compassion-tour/ for an interesting podcast of David’s work. \nBelow is David’s schedule: \nSunday\, September 11: \n\n9 AM – First Unitarian Church of Dallas\n12 PM to 5 PM – Feeding Children Everywhere Richardson – Richardson Civic Center \n\nMonday\, September 12: \n\nMorning – Klyde Warren Park\n\nTuesday\, September 13:  \n\nMorning – Klyde Warren Park\n\nWednesday\, September 14:  \n\nMorning – Klyde Warren Park\n5:30 PM – Bottle Bricks Project – St. Barnabas Presbyterian Richardson\n\nThursday\, September 15:  \n\n7 to 9 PM – Knitting Project – Congregation Beth Torah Richardson \n\nFriday\, September 16: \n\nMorning – Klyde Warren Park\n\nSunday\, September 18: \n\nOpen for a house of worship talk\n\nMonday\, September 19:  \n\nMorning at Klyde Warren Park\n\nTuesday\, September 20: \n\nMorning at Klyde Warren Park\n2:30 to 4:30 PM – Podcast – The Crow Collection of Asian Art\n6:30 to 8 PM – Presentation / Conversation at The Crow\n\nWednesday\, September 21:  \n\n11:30 AM to 1 PM – Compassion Walk – Klyde Warren Park to Thanks-Giving Square

SUMMARY:Bottle Brick Building
DESCRIPTION:Grab your empty 20 oz. Gatorade bottles\, because it’s time to get building! Watch how you can transform your community by assembling bottle bricks made of plastic scraps that can ultimately become compassion benches\, raised planter beds\, and more. \nFrom CDFW Board Member Ron Bemis: \n I’ve become very interested in bottle bricks. I’ll provide a number of links below. The idea is to take a lot of similar-sized plastic bottles and pack them tightly with non-biodegradable waste material. The result is a solid “bottle brick” that 1) can be used in construction projects and 2) keeps this waste material out of landfills and oceans. \nUsing a mixture of natural ingredients (sand\, mud\, clay\, water) and perhaps some man-made cement\, a mortar is made to contain the bricks. Many projects have included benches\, but walls and other enclosures have also been constructed. In thinking about this\, it seems to me that a long-term project of filling and collecting bottles could be started – I’d like to involve the youth at my church\, and invite other churches and maybe even local elementary schools to join in. At some point\, we’ll have enough bricks to build a project. It might take anywhere from 6 months to a couple of years to get to that point. \nWe should have a goal in mind\, and I’m currently looking at various places around Richardson where it might be appropriate to build and install an “earth bench”. Or perhaps a round wishing well type enclosure that could be used as a raised planter. If you have an idea\, let me know! \nPlease check the links below\, share the link to this page\, and contact me if you’re interested in helping\, participating\, or being a part of the final project! \nIn any case\, grab a 20oz Gatorade bottle and rinse and dry it out. Then pull off the label and plastic rim and shove them inside. Keep the lid\, and continue to shove in pieces of plastic. Keep packing it in\, using a wooden spoon or special “smash tool” to fill all available space. If something seems too big\, use scissors to cut it into 1″ strips\, then 1″ squares. When it’s so full that you can’t smash in any more or squeeze the sides\, it’s done! Screw the lid back on\, write your name or a message on the bottle\, or decorate it in some way if you want. \nThat was easy\, right? If you’re like me\, you’ll be surprised at how much plastic waste you can fit into your bottle. You should feel good knowing that you’ve helped our environment by keeping all that plastic out oflandfills and oceans. Are you ready to fill another bottle? Maybe you can get some of your friends to start one too. Whether you fill a bottle or not\, please cut up those plastic six-pack holders before you toss them anywhere. \nContact me and let me know how you’re doing. We want to know how many bottles are filled so we can decide how close we are to our goal of building a bench (or whatever we decide to build). At some point\, we’ll want to get all the bottle bricks together. Also let me know if you want to be involved in helping to build the final project. In any case\, we’ll be glad to keep you informed how the project is coming along. \n\nReference links:\n\nSmash Tool\nWhat Goes Inside?\nHow-To Sheet\nCommunity Flyer\nBottle Labels\nBottle Bricks\nEcobricks\nPeace On Earthbench Movement\nDIY Landfill\nHow to Bottle Brick\nEco-Friendly Bricks\nBottle Brick Benches\nDavid Breaux’s Compassion Tour

SUMMARY:Dallas Democracy Awakening Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Dallas to be part of a nationwide mobilization to demand action to create a democracy of\, by and for the people. We will mobilize to call for solutions that protect the people’s right to vote and prevent our voices from being drowned out by big money. We will demand an end to a system dominated by corporations and the wealthy\, a system that prevents our country from addressing its greatest challenges – from inequality to climate change\, from providing health care to all to ensuring everyone is paid a living wage. \nThis nonpartisan rally will include speakers\, such as Arthur Fleming\, NAACP; David Griggs\, Sierra Cub; Mark York\, AFL-CIO\, Liz Wally\, Clean Elections Texas\, as well as.activities\, voter rgistration and game\, sign-making\, Stamp Stampede\, tables with information and a march to Lee Park. \nWhat are we asking for? \nOverturn U.S. Supreme Court rulings like Citizens United that have allowed billionaires and big business to spend literally without limit in their attempt to take over our elections. Support small donor/public funding of elections and return the power to the voters. \nDemand that Congress do its constitutional duty and commit to a fair and timely confirmation process for the next Supreme Court justice. DO YOUR JOB! \nFully restore the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act that was gutted by the Supreme Court’s recent Shelby County decision\, enabling states to reinstitute discriminatory Jim Crow-era laws. Support the Voter Empowerment Act of 2015. \nSupporting organization include: American Constitutional Society; Clean Elections Texas; CompassionateDFW; CWA 6215; Dallas AFL-CIO; Dallas Peace and Justice Center; Lambda Legal; League of Women Voters of Dallas; NAACP Dallas; North TexasLULAC; Public Citizen of Texas; Sierra Cub Texas; Social Action Council\, 1st Unitarian Church of Dallas; \nThis event is nonpartisan and we request no candidate nor political party signs or clohing to divert attention from the broadly accepted messages we are emphasizing with this event. Thank you.
