SUMMARY:Lecture + Workshop | Painting Enlightenment: The Art and Science of the Heart Sutra with Dr. Paula Arai
DESCRIPTION:Japanese biologist and visionary artist Iwasaki Tsuneo (1917-2002) painted the harmony he discovered between scientific and Buddhist views of reality. \nExpressing the interdependent\, impermanent\, and empty nature of phenomena\, he shaped the words of the Heart Sutra––a scripture prized for its concise expression of wisdom and compassion––into imagery drawn from ephemeral beauties of nature\, Buddhist culture\, and telescopic wonders. Enjoy a lecture by a curator of the exhibition\, Wisdom of Compassion: The Art and Science of Iwasaki Tsuneo (1917-2002)\, Dr. Paula Arai\, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Louisiana State University. Come early or stay late for the Brushing the Heart Mini Workshop\, where you can practice Japanese calligraphy and learn how to write the character for heart. \n  \nWHEN: Sat Mar 25 2017 \n12:45 pm – 1:45 pm Brushing the Heart Mini Workshop + 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Lecture \nOR \n3:45 – 4:45 pm Brushing the Heart Mini Workshop + 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Lecture \nCOST: Free for Friends of the Crow Collection\, $10 for the public

SUMMARY:In Search of Justice: Mexican American History Is American History
DESCRIPTION:Our final program for 2016 will add another dimension of our general theme for 2016\, “Owning Violence: Affirming Nonviolence.” Dr. Roberto Calderón\, an expert on Texas-Mexican history\, will bring our focus to the Texas Mexican population. \nAs we have learned about the lived experience of African Americans\, American Indians\, and Muslims in our society\, this presentation will deepen our understanding of the experience of Mexicans as a perceived “other.” We will continue to try to take an unflinching look at ourselves in relation to those who are different from us. Together\, from the perspective of our respective cultures and faith traditions\, we will reflect on the varied forms of violence in relation to the Mexican population – overt and subtle – and how we can with greater clarity and consistency truly be people of nonviolence. \nDr. Roberto Calderón is Associate Professor of History\, University of North Texas. His primary academic interest is in American Mexican history and he has a deep understanding of the history of Mexicans in Texas. \nMore about Dr. Calderón is available by clicking on this link:\nhttp://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=ffaqd8cab&oeidk=a07ede5x4nf80282d0b

SUMMARY:3-D Compassion: Lesa Walker\, M.D.
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to gather with us on this Peacemaking Sunday in Providence Hall to hear Dr. Walker talk about “3-D Compassion.”  Lesa is Founder of the Compassionate Austin Movement.  She describes the scope of compassion in three key dimensions – caring for others\, self\, and the Earth – and believes it is important to have intentional awareness and practice of compassionate action in these areas. She will describe the “3 Daily Questions” exercise and how “3-D Compassion” can be a daily devotional for cultivating a compassionate way of life\, one that leads to forgiveness\, reconciliation\, restoration and to true peace and healing in our broken world.  From a Christian perspective\, this is what Jesus’ life was all about.  Come join us for this exciting and transforming talk! \n
